Our Vision & Mission
Since 1986, Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation has been a catalyst for economic growth in 20 Minnesota counties. We work to build a prosperous region with vibrant communities, innovative businesses and a skilled and valued workforce.
To accomplish this, we invest in emerging businesses and the emerging workforce. We help businesses, local governments and nonprofit organizations find common ground, pool resources and achieve more.
Investment in the Region
Since establishment, Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation has advanced economic development in the 20-county region with total investments of more than $38 million. In 2007, donors contributed to regional endowment funds valued at close to $27 million. Countless organizations and collaborators have taken part in initiatives that further a common goal of sustainable prosperity in the region.

One of Six Minnesota Initiative Foundations
Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation is one of six Minnesota regional foundations established by the Minneapolis-based McKnight Foundation and regional citizens in 1986. Leaders in each region establish priorities and work plans. Initiatives are funded by regional donors and The McKnight Foundation.
The McKnight Foundation, a private philanthropic organization, seeks to improve the state's quality of life with economic development, leadership development, community building, and attention to the needs of families, youth and older adults.
A Symbol for the Region
The plow symbolizes Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation's commitment to break new ground as a regional philanthropic organization. It evokes the region's rich prairie and agricultural heritage, and represents our commitment to forge a path of leadership in 20 counties.
A plow stands outside our Owatonna, Minn., headquarters as a daily reminder of our mission. It was donated by Mr. Dennis Miller, Fillmore County, Minn.
